"We Will Ground Universities": SSANU and NASU Declare as They Embark on Nationwide Strike


During the strike, essential university services such as registry, bursary, works and maintenance, security, and students' affairs have been disrupted as SSANU and NASU members withdraw their services.

Muhammed Ibrahim, the National President of SSANU, disclosed on Sunday the unions' resolve to commence the strike, citing the Federal Government's failure to address their grievances regarding four months' unpaid salaries.

Despite assurances from the Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, of government consideration, SSANU and NASU proceeded with their industrial action, accusing the government of neglecting their plight.

The strike action follows the government's implementation of a no-work, no-pay policy, resulting in the withholding of salaries for university workers, except for members of ASUU who recently received their outstanding payments.

Ibrahim emphasized the unions' demand for parity in salary treatment and criticized the government's inaction despite previous appeals and warnings.Abdussobur Salaam, SSANU's National Vice-President, expressed dismay over the government's silence on the matter, stressing the urgent need for dialogue and resolution.

Effective from Monday, March 18, 2024, the strike is projected to last for seven days as a stern warning to the government to address the salary disparities faced by SSANU and NASU members.

The commencement of the strike signals heightened tensions between university staff and the government, underscoring the imperative for prompt resolution to safeguard the smooth functioning of academic institutions.
